Poggio ai Legni is a highly evocative name and the imagination lead us to visualize infinite stacks of log, sawmills, carpenter’s shops and more. Arriving there one realizes instead that the woods in issue are alive, abundant of leaves and often secular. The trees in fact dominate the territory showing no escape, seeming to decide the colour of the earth, which goes from ochre to a but red that marries the fallen leaves of autumn. This earth used in the mixtures of manufactured constructions, rendered the buildings similar to growths of the land, perfectly harmonizing with the surrounding landscape and atmosphere. Poggio ai Legni is situated in the highest point of the Montagnola Senese, surrounded as far as the eye can see by woods, that only rarely grant some space to fields, allowing you to notice only from a distance the hills and typical cypresses of Tuscany’s countryside. Although only 15 km from Siena, Poggio ai Legni is light-years away from the noise of the world. Here it is Silence that listens to our thoughts and our breath, filling our lungs and mind of pure, fresh air and nourishing relaxation and contemplation. The woods are filled with articulated paths, which allow long walks, cycling tours, horseback riding excursions and, in autumn, rich collections of mushrooms and chestnuts. Holms, chestnut trees, oaks and a few ash are the ideal habitat for the abundant and diverse local wildlife composed of badgers, deers, porcupines, wild boars, foxes and countless species of birds of which the sights are not rare, if not daily. Last but not least, the nocturnal show: the stars. So many and so close, like acupuncture on the skin, they totally leave you without words. Completely enthralled by this, my wife and I decided, in the middle of our life, to change path and accept a proposal. A teacher (my wife) and I an artist, we left the region of Veneto and our jobs in order to settle down here with our daughter. The intent was to be carbon copy of this landscape, to provide a receiving site that in shapes, colour and atmosphere could be appropriate to the magic of this place. The possibilities offered by the ensemble of country houses in stone were many, as such was the amount of work to deal with... but light-hearted and with determined will, we did it. We are still doing it and we will keep carry on. It is a natural place and therefore constantly transforming and progressing. And we are ready to welcome you here with the generous and hospitable way of capacious living trees.
