The Chianti is the area of hills between Florence and Siena. Its historic heart is Chianti Classico, the land of the Black Rooster. It includes the whole of Greve, Castellina, Radda and Gaiole in Chianti, and parts of the neighbouring municipalities, from San Casciano Val di Pesa to Castelnuovo Berardenga. The hills lie between 200 and 600 metres and are mostly planted with vines and olive trees.

The farm stays in the Chianti listed on Agriturismi.it are mostly among vineyards and olive groves, and more than eight in ten have a swimming pool. About half rent out apartments, one in three has a restaurant and more than one in four produces wine or olive oil. In their reviews, guests mostly mention the welcome from the hosts, the peace and quiet and the view over the hills.

Autumn brings the grape harvest and the new olive oil. You need a car to get around the villages.

WHERE TO STAY IN THE CHIANTI: half of the properties are between Barberino Tavarnelle, Greve and Castellina; from here you can reach Florence and Siena by car on the Florence–Siena highway or on the Chiantigiana road. Radda and Gaiole, further east, are the area of the castles of Volpaia, Brolio and Meleto. The page also includes nearby hills outside Chianti Classico, such as Impruneta, San Gimignano and Colle di Val d'Elsa.

WHAT TO SEE IN THE CHIANTI: the triangular square of Greve, the village of Montefioralle, the Rocca of Castellina with the Archaeological Museum of Chianti Senese, the Palazzo del Podestà in Radda covered with coats of arms, the Ricasoli family's Brolio Castle and the Badia a Passignano, with the Last Supper by the Ghirlandaio brothers.

FOOD AND WINE: finocchiona IGP, cinta senese cured meats, Tuscan pecorino and peposo all'imprunetina (peppery beef stew), with Chianti Classico DOP olive oil. To drink, Chianti Classico DOCG, with at least 80% Sangiovese, not to be confused with Chianti DOCG, made in a much larger area; and to finish, Vin Santo.

THINGS TO DO: a winery tasting, the 14 km walking loop between Greve, Montefioralle and Panzano, the white gravel roads of the Eroica by bike around Radda, the Via Romea Sanese from Florence to Siena in four stages.

Spring (April–June) and Autumn (September–October) are ideal. In spring, nature is blooming; in autumn, you can witness the grape harvest and the landscape turns spectacular colors (foliage). July and August are very hot but excellent for enjoying the pool.
