Those who wish to open a farmhouse in Calabria are subject to the Regional Law No. 14 of April 30, 2009 (Update of measure no. 22 of September 7, 1988).

The Regional Law No. 14 sets the definition of farmhouse activities in the traditional way, by defining it as hospitality carried out by farmers. The business includes the administration of food and drinks produced at the farmhouse, with preference given to those characterized by the DOP, IGP, IGT, DOC and DOCG brands. The owners of farm land can use the enterprise to organize recreational activities or meetings aimed at the cultural knowledge of  food and wine heritage of the area. In all the circumstances, the employer is required to maintain the prevalence of farming over the farmhouse activities, and limit the capacity of accommodation to a maximum of 30 beds and 10 places for tents and caravans. The prospective owners of a farm must subscribe to the Regional List and present at their Municipality the detailed documentation of the project related to eligibility and  sanitary certification of  the place which hosts the farmhouse.
