The evocative valley of the Agri river is also worth visiting, dominated by mount Volturino and Monte di Viggiano with its famous Sanctuary. The thousands-year-old history of this land, once known as Lucania, can be read in the myriad small villages and archaeological sites that treasure a wide cultural heritage. A must-see is Matera with its Sassi, and the towns of Melfi, Metaponto, Policoro, Maratea with the castle of Castrocucco, Pisticci and Venosa with the Abbey of the Holy Trinity, in addition to the clear waters of the Ionio Sea.

Traditional dishes are many and varied: among them we can find sheep “cutturiddu”, ciaudedda, gnummarieddi and codfish with “cruschi” (crunchy) peppers. Taste sweet sanguinaccio, the famous lucanica, soppressata and salame pezzente, but also the strong taste of pecorino cheese from Filiano and Vulture olive oil. Among wines, Aglianico del Vulture is the most popular one.

Summer is the right season to enjoy the guided tours of Sassi di Matera, discovering the history of a thousands-year-old town that unravels among churches, convents and palaces. Among traditional events Lauria Folk Festival is worth mentioning, with its music, performances and folk dances.
