Details:
This is one of the oldest traditional festivals in Umbria and in Italy: we are talking about the “Festival of the Ceri”, an event that plays a key role in the community of Gubbio and will be held on the 15th May.
During this traditional festival, the “Ceraioli”, people who bring the Ceri, 300 kg of wood frame in which top there are the statues of St. George, S. Antonio and S. Ubaldo, run through the narrow medieval streets, swinging the Ceri and often touching walls and windows.
Many trace the origins of this festival in 1160, when died the bishop of Gubbio Baldassini Ubaldo, the patron saint to whom the medieval guilds were used to offer wax as a gift. Others attribute the birth of this festival to the goddess Ceres, linked to the awakening of spring.
Another fascinating event, which will be held on the 27th May in Gubbio, is the “Palio of the Crossbow”, of ancient origins dating back to the fifteenth century. In fact, in a document dated 1650 are listed the “Chapters to be observed in pulling the Crossbows during the Feast of the Glorious Patre and our Protector, St. Ubaldo”.
Today, the crossbowmen of Gubbio and Sansepolcro, compete with the ancient crossbow in the beautiful scenery of Piazza Grande in Gubbio, trying to hit the mark, a target placed 36 meters far; the crossbowman who manages to hit the nearest point to the center of the target receives an award that is the Palio.
