Agro Pontino is an area once covered by extensive marshes. Located in Lazio, it is geographically a terrace overlooking the sea, not far from the volcanic peaks of the region. According to some studies, the first settlements on the spot were by the Volscians, an Italic people who lived in pre-Roman times and during the Roman empire.

Drained in the 30s by the Mussolini government, the area of Agro Pontino had been, prior to this initiative, an unhealthy place for men, but full of important plants and animal species, such as red swans and herons. Among the consequences of reclamation, as well as the defeat of malaria, there was the founding of the city of Latina (Littoria until 1946), the urban center created in 1932 in order to redevelop the whole area. By visiting the city you can see some instances of fascist architecture, such as Palazzo M and Palazzo Quadrato.

Another important city of Agro Pontino is Rome, which needs no introduction, since it would be very difficult to summarize its charm in just a few lines. If you want to stroll in the evening in front of the Colosseum, or discover the beauty of the Fogliano Lake, which is located near Latina, start immediately to plan your vacation to discover the Pontine region, and first of all look at this.
