Details:
Today we interview Mrs Elisa, owner of Farmhouse La Ruer Verda, in Brione in the province of Brescia. The scents of the earth and the flavours of honey, of chestnuts and cold cuts can be enjoyed in an authentic and relaxing atmosphere.
Where does the name of your farmhouse come from?
The “ruer verda” is a species of oak which is evergreen, even in winter. It is a very rare species, and some botanists mantained that it is a sterile tree, but actually this is not our case, since on our land we also have small trees.
What led you to undertake this business?
I have four children, and I wanted to find a job that allowed me to stay with them, but I also have a real passion for my land. Passion is essential, since this job is very hard and extremely dependent on the seasons: this year for instance we’ve had drought, and last year hail, it’s not easy at all.
How did your farmhouse originate?
My husband and I come from this area, and the farmhouse was opened 13 years and a half ago, in order to enhance the pre-existing farm and to make use of the land that would otherwise be uncultivated. Our production is varied, and we also sell directly our products; we are now completing an IGT cellar for the sale of wine, and soon it will be possible to buy our jams, our honey and cold cuts.
Your farmhouse is surrounded by woods; do you have any special activities?
There are different chestnut tree woods and it is possible to have a walk and pick up chestnuts. We also offer cultural activities, and soon we will be able to welcome students for educational activities. We would like to focus on the world of bees, which is extremely fascinating. Often there is some confusion about the bee, an animal that is a bit scary, but that actually spends its entire short life working. We have fruit trees and in particular an ancient variety of peaches which needs no chemical treatment, and whose flesh is red.
Do you have any special offers for this autumn?
Our typical dish for the cold months is broiled meat served with a first course and roasted chestnuts!
