Domodossola is a lively town located in the heart of Ossola. Situated in the valley of the river Toce, at the foot of the historic hill of Mattarella and Vagna hills, its historic center still remains the medieval flavor.

About Domodossola:
According to tradition in 917 Berengar I  , have granted to Domodossola the weekly market, held today through Saturday, attracting many tourists and local inhabitants. During the period of the Lords, Domodossola was the first submitted to the Visconti and Sforza then. After the fall of Ludovico il Moro, the village fell under Spanish rule that lasted for two centuries. The partition of the Spanish dominions assigned to the Ossola Charles VI, Maria Theresa then. After the French Revolution (during which the Ossola belonged to the Cisalpine Republic and the Kingdom of Italy) and the fall of Napoleon, was the chief town of Domodossola mandate under the Savoy. In 1906 completed the Simplon railway tunnel, a work important to the economy of the Valley.

Regarding the aspect of taste, the food of Domodossola is the same that is found throughout the Ossola: products characterized  by “poor” tradition and still retain the same flavors of the past. The tradition “ossolana”of black bread, for example, made from rye flour, whole wheat and baked in wood, sometimes enriched with walnuts, hezelnutz, figs, apples, pears and raisins.

If you want to do after eating a bit of sport, Domodossola is also provided over seventeen kilometers of trails, four lifts, and new technology chairlifts. The ski resort Domobianca is a paradise for skiers. Twelve tracks stretching from the Alps to Lusentino Moncucco (to 1,900 meters) with a drop of one thousand meters. A track green, one blue, three red and seven black to suit the tastes of all skiers.
And now, just needed a little shopping! The typical handicrafts has always been based on the exploitation of the resources of the mountain area. For this reason there are numerous activities which still dealing wood, restoration of furniture and musical instruments. In ”800 in the furnace of Premia, in the valley Antigorio with clay extracted from the river Alfenza were made majolica who inspired those of the ancient “vasari cunardesi” and “campionesi”.

Domodossola, known affectionately by all citizens who live there ‘Domo’ is a small town that preserves its ancient splendor, an excellent destination for nature lovers and the healthy walks in the mountains as well as for all the curious hearing this town always appoint the famous phrase as D as…..Domodossola!
